Mats Wilander- pronounced Vilander-(born August 22, 1964) is a former World No. 1 tennis player from Sweden who won seven Grand Slam singles titles and one Grand Slam doubles title. He is particularly remembered for winning three of the four Grand Slam singles events in 1988, his most successful year on the tour.
Wilander won three French Open singles titles, three Australian Open singles titles, and one U.S. Open singles title. The only Grand Slam singles title Wilander never won was Wimbledon. He did, however, capture the men's doubles title at Wimbledon in 1986 (partnering countryman Joakim Nyström).
Wilander won a total of 33 singles titles and seven doubles titles during his career.
In 2002, Wilander was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
Notice where he lives...His daughter named Emma???Wilander now spends much of this time living in Hailey, Idaho (part of the Sun Valley ski resort) with his wife Sonja (née Mulholland), a South African-born model. He competes from time-to-time on the senior tour. Since retiring as a player, he has served as captain of the Swedish Davis Cup team and as coach of the Russian player Marat Safin. He also occasionally spends time commentating tennis matches on Eurosport.
Wilander has four children named Emma, Karl, Erik, and Oscar. His son Erik suffers from a comparatively mild form of Epidermolysis Bullosa, and Wilander and his wife have worked to raise funds for research into cures for the disease.[1]
Jami is going to State Tennis on Friday, her first match is against Emma Wilander...good luck with that jami.
