tide or tie?

i know i know i have been a slacker and haven't put up the fun pictures and stories from when my family visited. it will happen. UNTIL then i have a question for all you folk.

today i was talking to my dear friend monica and i said to her "have a snack to tide you over until dinner time."
she thought that was all funny because she always thought it was to "tie" you over.
ANYWAYs i think people say it both ways. 3 of my roommates say "tide" and 1 says "tie"
i thought that was quite an interesting discovery, and wonder what it is that you say??
do tell.

We grew up saying tide, but I say tie now because tide didn't make sense once I thought about it not that long ago.
